Employers have less and less need for unskilled labour. They need people who have proved they have talent, initiative, drive and determination. They need individuals who have proved that the can rise to the challenge. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is an individual who is trained in accountancy and has been equipped with various skills in accountancy-related functions. A CPA has an unusually wide range of options in the kind of work he / she can undertake. A CPA can be financial accountant, a finance manager, an internal auditor, an external auditor, a management accountant, a tax consultant / advisor, an insolvency / corporate recovery practitioner, an accounting service consultant, a Chief Executive Officer, a lecturer etc.
To register as a CPA(U) student, one must have one of the following qualifications:
Degree
A degree from a recognized university. If the degree is obtained from outside Uganda, it must be accredited by the respective government and NCHE may have to validate it.
Certificates/Diplomas
An Accounting Technicians Certificate from a recognized professional accountancy body such as ICPAU, KASNEB, NBAA, etc.
A diploma pursued in a period of at least two years from a recognized university or Institution of Higher Learning. If the qualification is obtained from outside Uganda, it must be accredited by the respective government and NCHE may have to validate it.
A professional certificate offered by another body such as KASNEB, CIPS, CIM etc.
A-Level Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least two principal passes or the equivalent plus a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least 5 credits, including English Language and Mathematics or the equivalent.
The CPA (U) course is designed to produce competent professional accountants, capable of making a positive contribution to the profession and the national economy in general. The graduates of the course have the potential to serve in many capacities, which include financial and management accountants, finance managers, auditors, tax and financial consultants, chief executive officers, chief operating officers etc.
